A Minor Setback For A Major …Rematch? Poirier vs. McGregor Part II

With enough time to let his wounds from this past weekend heal. Dustin Poirier (25-6) has gone to twitter to let it be known whom he has eyes set on now. A rematch with McGregor (21-4), at this point in their careers, is what he claims makes “a lot of sense”.

With both men coming off losses to the champ, this may be the fight, or should we say, “rematch” that needs to happen.

In a recent ESPN interview with Ariel Helwani, Conor took the time to apologize to everybody and take accountability for his past actions. But his response to Dustin Poirier on twitter was far from a man who was apologetic. It was that of a man who still knew his worth and refused to respond with that same kind of grace he displayed in that interview.

McGregor opened up his tweet by saying “ I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro…” and ended it by letting it be known that even though he’s been out of the game for a while, things still run on his terms.

With their first bout occurring in 2014 at featherweight, a lot has changed since then. The obvious being that neither men compete in that specific division, the second, Poirier has progressed tremendously and lastly, no one really knows how serious Conor is about the fight-game anymore.

One thing is certain though; Poirier is game to do it in the octagon or under the ZUFFA Boxing brand (which Dana has said is coming soon), as he tweeted in a quoted tweet by MMA Junkie and if Conor is willing to prove himself and show his fans that he still has that hunger within him, then this is the perfect fight for him to display that.

Is this just two men caught in the moment or could a potential match-up be brewing?  If I’m the UFC and Dana, I’m not hesitating at this opportunity. It’s best to strike while the iron is hot.■
