Deron Winn, an undefeated prospect, will be having his UFC debut against short notice replacement, Eric Spicely. Winn’s wrestling base has played a massive role toward his perfect MMA record. The Liberty, Missouri native is alumni to Lindenwood University and currently competes as a middleweight.

Winn trains out of the revered American Kickboxing Academy or sometimes simply called “AKA.” Winn trains on the same team with the likes of Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold, Bethe Correia and Khabib Nurmagomedov; two of these contenders being current champions in the UFC. With Cormier, Nurmagomedov and others being Winn’s trading partners, it’s easy for him to keep his base skills sharp while growing his overall MMA skill set. Like many wrestlers in the sport, Winn uses his striking to close in distance to either set up for a clinch or shoot for a takedown and finish with ground-and-pound. He particularly has been improving his overhand right and gaining more power in his hands.

Recently on The MMA Hour on SBN, Winn states that he originally expected to make his UFC debut back in March of this year. “Originally, Winn’s fight camp was trying to have him fight on the same card as Cormier but didn’t become a possibility so they proceeded to figure out what would work best for Winn. Winn mentions that in the process of setting up his match that “4 or 5 guys decline to fight.” He also stated that he was still “green” to the MMA game and is willing accept any fight the UFC is willing to offer him with a desire to climb the UFC rankings.

Within the past weekend, Winn’s opponent has changed three times. First being scheduled to fight against Markus Perez, then being matched against Bruno Silva. After Silva dropped out, Winn is now set against another high level wrestler in Eric Spicely. This new match is anticipated to be a grappling-heavy match since Spicely is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiujitsu under Tim Burrill. Currently Winn and Spicely have their bout scheduled in the preliminary portion at UFC on ESPN+ 12 this weekend. The preliminary fights will be broadcast on ESPN2.
