This Saturday, April 13, 2019, Atlanta will play host to a highly anticipated lightweight main event between the current undisputed featherweight champion, Max “Blessed” Holloway and lightweight star, Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier. For Poirier, the chance to fight for UFC gold has been a long time coming. He currently has 30 fights under his belt with a record of 24-5, 1 NC.
Poirier joined the UFC in 2010 during the WEC/UFC merger. Since then, he has been a part of some of the most memorable UFC fights including his 2015 performance against Holloway’s teammate, Yancy Meidieros in which he won by TKO in the first round, his 2018 fight against Justin Gaethje, which he won via TKO, and former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, who Poirier knocked out in the second round.
Poirier has always been vocal about his desire to compete for a UFC title. His hashtag, #StrapSZN is almost always on his Instagram posts and he is not afraid to call out whoever he feels would help him get to his goal of becoming a world champion.

Poirier and Holloway do have a history. They fought once before at UFC 143, in which Poirer submitted Holloway in the first round and earned submission of the night. Since then, Holloway has gone on to become the undisputed featherweight champion.
Poirier is not just a fighter. He participates in charity work and regularly auctions off his fight kits to raise money for various causes. His UFC 236 fight kit will be auctioned off to build a playground for disabled children.
UFC 236’s main event will definitely be a fight to remember. Both Poirier and Holloway have delivered some of the UFC’s most memorable performances. Holloway isn’t afraid to stand and strike with his opponent and Poirier has his eyes on the belt and will do whatever he needs to in order to make sure that Dana White wraps the belt around his waist at the end of the night. It is well known that Hawaiians are some of the best scrappers in the world, but we shouldn’t underestimate the fact that diamonds are made under pressure.
