Maycee Barber: Chasing PVZ

UFC contender Maycee Barber seems to be the future of the flyweight division. In her last bout she walked down Gillian Robertson showing no reverence to Robertson’s punching power. It was a “Big Sister” type of thrashing that she gave her opponent that was also quite the crowd pleaser. Shortly before that, Barber had been more vocal about her goals and position in the flyweight division. Fellow flyweights like Paige VanZant have shown aversion to Maycee’s attitude and ability, but any reaction is better than none.

Lesson of the day: RESPECT One of the first lessons we learn in martial arts is respect. I respect those who have dedicated themselves to this profession and given it their everything to achieve greatness through showcasing their skill. I respect every female fighter tagged in this post. With that said, it would be an honor to share the cage with any of you ladies at 115 or 125. If any of you are interested, let @UFC & @mickmaynard2 know because I'm healthy and ready to get back in there. @xiaonan_yan @jodieesquibel @syuri_official @cynthia.calvillo @spidermonkeyyoda @alexa_grasso @tatianasuarezufc @karolinakowalkiewicz @castironcasey @karatehottiemma @angieoverkill @alexchambersmma @teciatorres @randamarkos @emwhitmire115 @mackenziedern @zhangweilimma @livinhaufc @marinarodriguezmma @shockwavecifers @virnajandiroba @amandaufcribas @briannathebull @arianelipski @jessicammapro @joannajedrzejczyk @alexisdavismma @jessicaevileye @roxyfighter @laurenmurphymma @maryna_moroz_ufc @bulletvalentina @blondefighter @badmofo_jojo @veronicamacedomma @luciepudilovamma @champyoni @maramarvillarb @kalindrafaria @polianabotelho_ufc @wuyananufc_ @nadia187kassem @montana.delarosa @rachaelostovich @danger_dobson @savage_ufc @pedritaprvtufc @polyanaviana @princesstiger_mma @andreakgblee @meatballmolly @jennimaiaufc @antoninapantera @arianelipski @tailasantos.ufc @sabinamazo @viviaraujomma @mirandagranger @hannahgoldy @fightermizuki @dianabelbita @luanadread

Unable to schedule VanZant as her next opponent, Barber instead will stand across from Roxanne Modafferi. Modafferi is battle-tested and familiar with competing at this level. She is currently ranked #7 for a reason.

Barber is still 21 and has plenty of time to improve, but a rise to the title would really be something special so early in her career. She wants to become the youngest ever UFC champion in history, and a win here will be part of a historic run if she is able to seize the title as an undefeated fighter. She has everything that you could ask for in a potential combat star: she’s young, undefeated, vocal, explosive and coming off three straight knockouts.

Headlining the prelims on ESPN is a promising sign that the UFC is behind her and wants the world to see this talent that they are developing. Another stunning performance would help her greatly considering the visibility the main event will offer her.

Already ranked the #9 flyweight in the world, Saturday will probably be Maycee’s last opponent that she will be able to dominate with pure physicality. Viviane Araujo, Joanne Calderwood, and Jessica Eye are all able veterans that will be tough tests in the future. With just a few more wins in a row, we could be seeing Barber compete for the belt in the final quarter of this year. The Flyweight Queen, Valentina Shevchenko seems unbeatable to most, so if Maycee looks spectacular leading up to a fight against the champion, she can at least have a good performance.

It is never boring to see contenders call each other out, so hopefully Maycee will give everyone a post-fight interview worth remembering. There are many contenders available to Maycee, but VanZant certainly seems like the most likely target of a direct challenge. ■
