New UFC 244 Addition: Kevin Lee vs. Gregor Gillespie

With the addition of Kevin “The Motown Phenom” Lee (17-5-0) vs. Gregor “The Gift” Gillespie (13-0) UFC 244 has officially become an embarrassment of riches, as a rich fight card has only gotten richer. With the card being one of the most anticipated cards of the year, these two men are the perfect fit for a fight card that’s taking place in New York.

Attempting to pull a “Showtime” and move-up to the welterweight division with success seemed like the right thing to do for Kevin Lee. Unfortunately he failed in his opportunity against RDA in his most recent bout.

Although the loss brought upon some questions for “the Motown Phenom”, it definitely cleared the air of any speculations that he could win gold at welterweight. Reassuring him that his home is at the lightweight division and that any chance of capturing a title is at that division where he has already once competed for an interim title.

His opponent for UFC 244 may not be his highest profile opponent and although Kevin Lee is the younger of the two (and probably more well known), Gregor Gillespie has quickly made a name for himself.

“The Gift” is basically the gift that keeps on giving. Since his emergence in the UFC back in 2016, Gillespie has finished all but one (his debut) of his fights in the UFC. As for the “Motown Phenom” he hasn’t been on the winning side of a fight since early 2018 but his prior 3 fights including the Barboza victory have all come by finishes.

Kevin Lee will definitely be the biggest name that Gillespie has fought but his credentials of being an All-American college wrestler and a division 1 champion means that Kevin Lee isn’t doing himself any favors by making this his return fight.

There is no word if this fight will be the featured bout on the prelims or if it will take place on the PPV portion of the card, but it definitely has the perfect recipe to start off the PPV portion of the card with it being such a meaningful fight for Kevin Lee and a homecoming for Gillespie.■
